This blog is primarily for my creative or not so creative expressions. I keep dabbling with different things from time to time and I hope this will be a way to share it with family and friends.

Oh My, Time Flies !!
In the past couple years, I have done some interesting activities like carpentry work (literally), assisted with roof building, travelled for a plein air workshop, been doing radio shows and managed non profit or attempted to keep it afloat ofcourse despite everything managed to keep some artwork going. Currently I am doing a decluttering project in my apartment totally inspired by Feng Shui with a sincere hope that it will bring some much needed good luck my way. I hope some good luck finds its way into my life :-)
I will try to get them in here one by one and see how best I can share them all. Stay tuned - atleast some of them is coming this way in a week's time :-)

A Salute to the Art of Improvisation!
No matter how big or small our homes are, a point comes when we got to clear the clutter and all these "not so good" pieces get the hardest kick. Recently I have been at it and found some 11 x 14 pieces of designs on yupo that had a thick layer of a blob like thing; the kind of blob that made them seem a disaster! I pleaded with my brain to come up with some way to use them and even ardently prayed to dear god; finally what seemed like a eureka moment - I was prompted to use the "Art of Improvisation".
Improvisation was a final attempt to revive their usability. I looked around me and saw some leftover water in a bottle that I had attempted to finish minutes ago. I divided the water into three separate bowls (small) and added couple drops of three different inks in each. It was now a diluted medium of yellow, brown and orange. Then I took some of each in my palm, poured it on the designs, let it flow and take its place on the cards. Since it was really wet and very late, I had to let it dry through the night.

Understanding Abstract art !
Dabbling with Abstract art was a journey - going with reference to no reference. Let me explain, A painting can be replicated or referenced from nature - anything that has structure, proportion, shape, size, color and texture OR it can be created from zero reference or no starting point. Such art that is created with no reference is born from our reflections in life, experiences, thought process that cannot necessarily be put into words. Our emotions at that moment determine the color and textures. As we progress through the creation, our emotions change, our mood is further uplifted and we realize it has turned out to be completely different than what we anticipated. We are completely surprised by the outcome! It becomes our baby - our creation through the days, months and years in some cases.
So why then, is it difficult to understand or interpret this art? Well, as human beings we like defining things, we like to give structure, shape , size and form to everything we see or make; even in relationships or everything we do in life, we fix our belief with a label or a name. When we suddenly see something beyond it, we are lost. Now as my art is constantly evolving, I realize, its not as formless as I initially thought, it has a composition that works together, a set of lines created by series of colors that talk to each other or textures that mean something. The best thing however is like life, each person can have their own experience or interpretation from the same piece and walk away with their own personalized vibration. Gradually as I continue to understand better, I am beginning to love the abstractness in life, that which cannot be defined but simply interpreted /experienced.
Abstract art as I see it, is an new born expression - each time!
Experimenting Yupo !!!
So I bought some paper and tried working on it. I started with making 11 x 14 size papers and made few very beautiful designs with Bombay Ink and Water Colours. Since it is water resistant, you can pour a bucket of water and it will still create a puddle vs. soak it in. So I decided to experiment and play around with it - I tried using ink and water colors with no water, little water and lots of water. Each one had such a drastic difference. Ink and water colors with no water created a thick blob like abstract, little water gave it a focussed design feel with areas without water untouched and more water gave it a very glass like look and feel. Gorgeous!
Once I had played around with it and gotten a feel, I used it to make bookmarks, thank you cards and larger pieces as gifts for family and friends. While oil, acrylic and water colors have their own beauty, yupo adds change to the world of art and creativity and allows some room for diversity.
I hope all my wonderful donors for my recent fundraising love the yupo cards and bookmarks I sent them :) will try to upload pics when I can...since I dont have a camera yet, its hard but I will figure some way to upload them.

A Weekend for Encaustic Paintings
A few seconds later, my eyes still wide open and my mind anxious - finally something promising! Encaustic Wax Painting Workshop on the weekend of June 20th - 21st. Counting on the email to hold my eyelids open little longer, I explored the idea of finding my lost passion again. I responded , registered and paid in the next 10 min and slept to a hope of a better weekend in just a week!
The day finally arrived and I reached there 10 min late. Believe me, and/or if you know me really well, that was the earliest I could get there. If its said, at the start of learning there is chaos and an open mind then I was ready! I had an open mind, that sounded very rested and preoccupied with a zillion thoughts of work.
Encaustic, I learnt is not a new word or for that matter not even a new art. It is a very ancient technique of painting using molten wax. It was commonly used by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, in which coloured pigments were mixed with molten wax and painted on panels. If one is cursed with a general knowledge like mine, an immediate image of Ancient Egyptian = Mummy would flash in front of you, however enlightenment was in order. Mummies are not made or preserved using wax or any encaustic technique - duh, ofcourse I know that!
Encaustic technique is a very simple one and anyone can create a very good and mesmerising piece of art whether or not they can paint. It uses a combination of molten wax with oil colors, hot iron/skillet on a rigid and hard surface although sometimes one can use a stretched canvas as well. In wikipedia's words, The simplest encaustic mixture can be made from adding pigments to beeswax, but there are several other recipes that can be used — some containing other types of waxes, damar resin, linseeed oil or other ingredients. Pure, powdered pigments can be purchased and used, though some mixtures use oil paints or other forms of pigment. Metal tools and special brushes can be used to shape the paint before it cools, or heated metal tools can be used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface. Today, tools such as heat lamps, heat guns, and other methods of applying heat allow artists to extend the amount of time they have to work with the material. Because wax is used as the pigment binder, encaustics can be sculpted as well as painted.
If you love collage as much as I do, you can collage memories and transform it into a abstract art, using the encaustic medium to adhere it to the surface.
It was the most productive weekend in June and I created five pieces out of my active mind - I call them my original art and one piece I practiced from a existing piece of art. Overall I created and that was all that mattered. Finally, convinced I could do something other than work, I came home with a T shirt and Jeans firmly imprinted with memories from the wonderful weekend and aww so awesome pieces of abstract art!
And when I went to bed that night, I thanked the universe first and then the Roman, Egyptians and Greek Gods for the ancient technique, the email that held my eyelids open (really difficult task), the immediate reaction to pay and register and finally for introducing me 'again' to my creative side. It seemed to give me just the amount of pleasure and joy I needed for the moment!

Painting - Finally
More slashes with different colors to denote the fall colors. It looked so different on the day it was painted and then a week later when I saw it, the color seemed to sink in more, adding to its beauty. Felt content and thrilled!
The week I finished this one, it was Canada Day! So I made a greeting e-card out of this and send it to my canadian friends and project team, They simply loved it.
I am told this sceneic beauty is seen mostly in a part near Toronto where there are cottages and beautiful millionaire homes. Since this wasnt my original, I cant take credit for it but if it does remind anyone of any natural scenery, Its a good feeling!
Painting in Progress - Day 2
Closer slashes to denote it to be a ton of trees clumped together and little gap to allow the sky light to fall in...
In order to show the slight slope on the land, I had to angle the strokes.
More to come in the final picture..
